Obituary for Charles Cleveland "Charlie" Clarke

Sergeant first class (e7) Charles C. Clarke, a proud veteran of the United States Army, passed away November 24th, 2022, from a brief illness. He was eighty-two years old. The son of John and Georgianna Clarke, Charlie was born and
raised in Burgaw, NC. He graduated from C. F. Pope High School. After graduation, Charlie joined the U.S. Army and began his career in the 82nd Airborne Division as a Communications Specialist. He helped protect his country by fighting in the Vietnam War, where he received the Purple Heart. In all, he proudly served for 22 years. After retirement, Charlie discovered, in addition to his love for family and friends, he had a “green thumb”. So, he had now found his new career...horticulture! He took classes at Fayetteville Community College to further his knowledge and established his business, Triple C Landscaping. But more importantly, he just enjoyed giving his plants to family and countless friends throughout the community.

He was a man who believed in the importance of family, friends, and community. His faith was strong, and he was a compassionate man who never met a stranger. He would engage you in any type of conversation, especially one that would have an impact on the world. He always supported and encouraged the younger generation, especially his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews that he cherished. These conversations and lessons will never be forgotten.
An example of his love for great conversations and debates was becoming a member of The Hardee’s Breakfast Club, better known as the Hardee’s Boys. This is a group of friends that got together every day to enjoy comradery. This group gave Charles many engaging conversations and much enjoyment and laughter. The Hardee’s Boys also is known for their acts of kindness and compassion to others throughout the community. They will forever be a part of our family.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mable; three children, Steve (Barbara), Samara (Joey), and Benjamin; two wonderful grandchildren, Jawaun and Yasmin; many nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends whom he adored. His loved ones will remember his courage, sense of humor, generosity, and zest for loving each beautiful day. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
