Obituary for Lokie Melton Stephenson Sr.

God in His infinite wisdom and divine love, called from our midst our loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend, Lokie M. Stephenson, Sr. to his eternal rest, Saturday, February 24, 2018.


He was born June 18, 1942, in Murfreesboro, North Carolina.to the late John W. Stephenson, Sr. and Grace Cox Stephenson. Lokie grew up in Newport News, VA and attended Newport News Public Schools and graduated from Huntington High School. At an early age, Lokie gave his life to Christ and in 1983, he rededicated his life to Christ and became a member of the Riverside Baptist Church, Fort Washington, MD. Lokie was faithful in serving as Chairman of the Trustees Board at Riverside Baptist Church and Mount Gerizim Christian Church, Fayetteville, NC. He served in and supported numerous ministries as a member of Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist, Fayetteville, NC and Third Baptist Church, Hampton, VA.


From a blind-date Lokie met and married Evelyn Page in August 1975. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. Lokie helped many people over the years. He had a passion for talking to and encouraging his nieces, nephews and others. Lokie loved to attend family gatherings especially at his Aunt Elsie in Murfreesboro, NC.
Lokie started working at an early age. He had a paper route and cooked and managed the Waffle Bar. After moving to Washington, DC, Lokie gained employment with and retired from Montgomery County Government, Silver Spring, MD. During his 30 years of dedicated service, Lokie received several awards as a Truck Driver, Snow Remover, Heavy Equipment Operator and Foreman. As a leader, there were no jobs too hard for Lokie to perform. Upon moving to Fayetteville, NC, Lokie established his lawn care business and provided outstanding services to many customers.


Lokie was preceded in death by his brother, John W. Stephenson, Jr.
Left to cherish his memories are: his wife, Evelyn; children: Christopher M. Stephenson, Netra L. Blue and Lokie, Jr. grandchildren: Jamiya, Elijah and Nadia, sisters: Rosalind Beveridge, Ruth Bonner (Lawrence), Cynthia Stephenson and Angela Rogers, and brother: Antonio Stephenson, half-sister: Barbara (Raymond) Hoskie, sister-in-laws: Caretha Jeter and Joanette Page and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
